Pharrell – Paper Magazine (November 2010)

A nice piece of artistry.  Pharrell graces the latest cover of Paper Magazine.  He chops it up about branding, skateboard culture, and his various collaborations in clothing design.  A quick snipet with Pharrell and Shepard Fairey after the jump.
SF: I’m a huge fan of your music but I want to learn a little bit more about how you evolved into the clothing, the art collecting, how you collaborated with FriendsWithYou, Louis Vuitton — how this evolved is what I’m really interested in.
PW: To be honest, it’s about going from one lily pad to the next and just making sure you hop on the right ones. And it’s just important you do things that are exciting to you and that present a learning experience. I don’t ever want to do anything that I can’t learn from, so that’s why I always collaborate with the best: because I know they can teach me.

New Tiger Woods/Nike Commercial featuring…his Dad?
I honestly don’t know what to think of this new commercial. I guess it aired this evening for the first time, and I got the heads up from my dude Matt Ausmann about it. I had to post it, mainly because I’m not sure if it’s a genius move by the shoe gods, or just a crazy attempt to humanize Tiger.
Either way, it definitley straddles the line of morality. I mean, this dude’s pops is dead! And they used his voice for a commercial to redeem Tiger from his own dumb self. I don’t even know what to think right now.
I guess Nike went ahead and took heed to their own motto: Just Do It.

Art and Copy Film Trailer
ART & COPY is a powerful new film about advertising and inspiration. Directed by Doug Pray (SURFWISE, SCRATCH, HYPE!), it reveals the work and wisdom of some of the most influential advertising creatives of our time — people who’ve profoundly impacted our culture, yet are virtually unknown outside their industry. Exploding forth from advertising’s “creative revolution” of the 1960s, these artists and writers all brought a surprisingly rebellious spirit to their work in a business more often associated with mediocrity or manipulation: George Lois, Mary Wells, Dan Wieden, Lee Clow, Hal Riney and others featured in ART & COPY were responsible for “Just Do It,” “I Love NY,” “Where’s the Beef?,” “Got Milk,” “Think Different,” and brilliant campaigns for everything from cars to presidents. They managed to grab the attention of millions and truly move them. Visually interwoven with their stories, TV satellites are launched, billboards are erected, and the social and cultural impact of their ads are brought to light in this dynamic exploration of art, commerce, and human emotion.

Cannot wait to hit this city up. And in a month’s time, that is just what I will be doing.
Barcelona at the end of this month, and Amsterdam at the end of next. Should be suhweet.
DJ Hero with Jay-Z and Eminem
Thanks to Aus for this. He wants a finder’s fee even though I already knew about. Ludicrous.
Anyway, DJ Hero is the DJ version of Rockband or whatever clowns are playing these days. The cool part is that Jay and Em are involved in some capacity.
Watch the video and learn way more about the game.
LeBron and Kobe Nike Commercial
Not exactly the Lil’ Penny or The LeBrons, but it’s cool in it’s own right.
Clearly, this is the NBA and the marketing world’s dream Finals match up. Hope L.A. makes it.
