Video: The Great J. Cole Debate
As I began my Sunday morning listening to Cole’s Friday Night Lights tape, I randomly stumbled across this discussion/analysis of Cole’s career to this point with Jump Off TV. This is an interesting conversation and echoes many of the same sentiments I have.
To a certain extent, it troubles me that music in 2011 must be critiqued/over-analyzed to the point it is. However, Cole’s career has had some perplexing moments. Yet, most of the criticism thrown Cole’s way is mainly because people believe he can deliver so much more.
One of the key points they make in here, and contrary to what I had believed, is that it is actually Cole and Cole’s camp who is making these missteps. I had always been under the impression Hov and Roc Nation was looking for the certain radio single to take him in a slight more mainstream direction. Let’s face it, ‘Work Out’ was not his best effort.
Finally, I do think they are slightly off in one comment they make. Because Cole, Wiz and Sean were on the same XXL cover together, they loosely link that cover to the paths of those respected artists’ careers as they stand in 2011. Mainly, they mention how Wiz and Sean have soared past Cole, and Cole should be in a much different position. I disagree on this account, and it’s more geared toward the Wiz comparison: Wiz and J. Cole have two EXTREMELY different audiences. I think some of the issues Cole has had stem from him trying to reach a younger core audience that is similar to Wiz’s. To me, Cole’s music is for the true heads, and in this day and age, I just don’t know how profitable that group will prove to be.
But…maybe it is just a marketing issue. If so, as they suggest in the video, he needs to get this ship off the dock…soon. So much for not saying anything about Cole til his album drops in September. Sue. me. Propers to Jump Off TV for the solid critique.

Denzel Washington Commencement Speech
I was just out in Philly about three weeks ago to visit my brother, Patrick, who goes to UPenn. Nice city, nice campus.
Denzel was the commencement speaker this year, so I thought I’d share his speech with everyone. While not the best commencement speech I have ever heard, he does drop a few nuggets in there. Please give it a watch, it will be worth your time.
If you haven’t failed, you’re not trying.
An Update from El Presidente (No Dennis Martinez)

First, I want to wish everyone a happy New Year and 2011. I hope everyone has a blessed, healthy and progressive year. Let’s all strive for our personal bests.
I probably don’t write as much commentary as things as I once did. Some of that is due to me posting less in general by being blessed that my best friend, Jay Up, has turned up the heat with his posting since jumping on board in November 2009. I have to say he does a great job. He does so well that it’s often hard to tell who is actually posting – me (MK) or him.
I say a blessing because it has really allowed me to free up my time to work on projects that will help our brand grow. The sad part is, however, that I do LOVE to write. In the future, I may get back to more commentary and reviews, but for now, I wanted to keep you updated on the progress of things we are working on as well as introducing a new member to our blogging team.
First, we should have some apparel available shortly. We have been working on this for a LONG time now. It had been difficult to find a supplier who could not only do everything we wanted at a good price point, but also build a long-term relationship with over time. I am a huge proponent of collaboration and building lasting, valued relationships, and I think we finally may have that in our supplier. Sammy J and Ricky Nice are working on the line with our girl, Madelyn Lee, who did the image above as well as the artwork for Give Up the Sticks, set to do the designs. She is working out in San Francisco at a hugely impressive firm called Dojo, and she is currently the art director for AT&T’s new ad campaign. Their firm did all the marketing and art direction for the last ‘Halo’ release.
Our first official collection should be dropping by March 1st and will be titled, Die Enormous. The collection will have three original designs tied together by the Die Enormous theme as well as two functional pieces, a hoodie and a winter hat. I am sure there will be some hiccups on the way, but I have wanted to execute this for SO LONG now. Living in London, I get to see all the dopest brands the world has to offer (Ralph Lauren is my all-time favorite), so we are setting out to create high quality, TIMELESS items at a feasible price point. You guys will love what we have to offer, I promise!
Second, we have a few events coming up with hopefully more on the horizon. Last year was really our initial foray into the event industry. Obviously, arts and entertainment go hand in hand. I want it to be known though that we are not out her to be ‘party’ promoters. With all of our events, we want to bring something of value to our following. Many of our live performance events will center around artists that we work with on a regular basis.
We did the huge show with B.o.B. last year, but will probably focus on medium to smaller more intimate events this year in a wider variety of locations such as Kent, Cleveland, Columbus and Chicago. Midwest HUH?!?!?! The first event we are involved with is January 22nd at the Lemon Grove in Youngstown, OH. Three acts we work with (who you have surely seen on the site), James John of Divine Minds, SoulKlap and KeilyN, will be performing starting at 10 pm. It should be a great show because The Lemon Grove is a more intimate, cafe type setting. IF you have never seen James John and Soul perform, it gets live! Also, they will be debuting KeilyN’s second single, Best of Me featuring James John and SoulKlap, off his upcoming release, My Pursuit of HAPPYness, at the end of their set to close the night off. Let me tell this song is SO SO SO ill. Pure hip-hop.
Our next event will be out in LaGrange Park, IL (outside Chicago) at Via Bella on February 5th from 9:30 on. It’s called The Classics and will feature classic House music. You can check out the details on that here.
After that, we are hosting a show at Skully’s Music Diner in Columbus called ‘My Cold Hearted Valentine’ on Monday, February 7th. We are still finalizing details, but Skully’s is such a kick ass venue! We are so happy to have our first official show there. The lineup will include a lot of our affiliated acts: Lindsey Compton, Poetic, James John of Divine Minds, SoulKlap, Themidas Touch and possible a few more. I will have final details on that by Monday.
We will be working on more events in the near future!
Finally, I am super proud to announce a new and super dope blogger to our lineup. Our cat Noah T who is a senior at Kent State will be joining the team like NOW! I used to post a lot, lot of fashion and style items on the site, but haven’t had the chance of late. That and every time I see dope shit I want to buy it, so posting on fashion was becoming an expensive habit. However, I still want it to be a large part of our blog because there are so many dope brands out there.
So, have no fear, Noah T is here to take care of that end. My dude knows EVERYTHING about fashion there is to know. I am so happy to have him on the team. He’s going to open your minds and bring some crazy shit to the table. He runs a dope Tumblr now which you need to check out – Noah’s Arq.
Well, I think that is it for now. I think I wrote enough to make up for not posting any commentary over the last six months. HA!
Thank you for always checking out the site and for our brand. We are so grateful and appreciative. Please just be sure to pay it forward and pass it along to your friends, colleagues, family, whoever! Also, feel free to hit us up at any point in time about anything. We LOVE collaboration! Again, we are grateful.

Fantasy Football Playoffs – LET’S GET IT!

WOW! Our fantasy league was a pressure cooker this year. Going into the last week only one playoff spot had been sewed up, five were up for grabs and like eight teams had a chance for those five spots. NUTS!
Heading into the weekend I was in 9th at 6-6, but had the third most points scored in the league. I started out the year 0-3, but finished crazy strong winning like six of my last seven. As you can see on the bottom right, I romped in my final week matchup and found my way to fourth place.
Shouts to Matt Ryan, Mo Jones Drew, Matt Forte, T.O., Greg Jennings, Reggie Wayne, not so much Todd Heap who got injured in the first quarter vs. Pittsburgh, Matt Bryant and the Ravens D. I have been scoring very consistently of late so a run to the championship may be in the cards. Not saying it will be easy, but the Lord knows I could use some good luck.
OK LET’S DO IT! Higher Plane FC FTW!!!
Boi-1da Co-Signs Give Up the Sticks

Umm…you may have heard of this cat Boi-1da. He’s produced for a few people you may have heard of called Drake, Eminem, Kanye, Weezy, Keri Hilson, & Trey Songz. I mean he was basically one of the hottest producers in 2010. LoL.
Anyway, the kid is a gamer and gave his approval on the project after giving it a listen. You know we are steady out here working, so it’s always good to get great feedback on something you’ve worked so hard on.
LoL.

This guy.
Never wrote on the whole bit. Maybe I will soon, but it’s been overkill in the media already. However, the things this cat tweets is straight comedy. If anyone is listening to advice from that guy…get a grip. Ring chasing at 25. SMMFH.
Hey Bron…we don’t believe you, you need more people.
J.Cole London Streets Interview with DJ Semtex
Jermaine Cole is in town (by in town, I mean my geographic location of London) for the 02 Wireless Festival that went down today. Hov was headlining and the shit sold out Hyde Park. I have attend the 02 for the last three years, but took a pass this year. I had intended to go, but waited around on getting tickets. I go to look about two weeks before the show, and it sold out. Now, I was thinking a sellout is about 50K, but then I come to find out its 90K. Once I saw that 90K number, I decided I wasn’t going to make the effort either way.

Never Judge A Book or Read One: London Riots Edition
By Michael Krieger
As the dust and debris settled in Clapham Junction on Tuesday, August 9th, one of the few shops left unscathed from the previous nights riots was Waterstone’s. A book store. Imagine that.
Unfortunately, as you will see 80 percent of the stores in a half mile radius did not fair so well.
At 9:50pm on Monday night, I got a text from my co-worker, Ciaran McGreevy.
“U watching the news? Clapham Junction getting smashed up! Currys, Wimpy! Ladbrokes, thank f*ck we top floor with door caged!”
My reply: “Really? Damn. I’m bout to go out there.”
I had known the riots were spreading, but I never watch TV, so prior to the text I did not know they had reached my area. And then, my high school classmate turned ex-pat, Don G., called to affirm the mob had indeed moved to Clapham.
His advice, “Be safe.” I said, “We’re from Youngstown, bro. I have to see what’s up.” So, I walked outside and down to the intersection which I cross daily to get to work. Immediately, I see chaos.
With about 1,500 people on the streets – bystanders and rioters – my initial 100 feet on to St. John’s Road could not even prepare me for the breadth of devastation I was going to encounter. Seeing an adolescent girl sprinting across the intersection with two full suitcases of merchandise was only the beginning.
For hours, a group of 400 to 500 kids, split into packs of 12-15, disregarded every law and social norm created prior to this date as they destroyed and looted the small businesses of hard working, community-minded people (and a few corporate places of business).
I remained outside for approximately 40 minutes. During that time, I walked the same path which I walk to work every day to find mobs of kids gathering to destroy the gate fronts of shops. Once the seal of the shops were broken, it was Christmas in August. Electronics, jewelry, Air Jordan’s and clothes were the flying off the shelves, walls and out of display cases.
Bystanders taking pictures and videos were threatened by kids with these masks on their faces. Hoodies and bandanas were also popular attire.
I was politely asked by someone who resembled Snoop from The Wire, “Why the f*ck you taking pictures? What the f*ck you taking pictures for b*tch?” Uhh…really? These kids were clearly not Oxford’s class of 2016.
As I turned the corner of St. John’s Road to head up Lavender Hill, janky Molotov cocktails were now being thrown. Unfortunately, the “fancy dress shop,” or the holy grail to the Aussies, Kiwis and Brits of the area, was the victim of a cover up operation. The rioters had broken in and were using masks from the shop to conceal their identities.
As the party shop was up in flames, I decided I had seen enough and headed for what I was hoping would be a peaceful walk home.
From judging the age of kids involved as well as having been in several “situations” growing up, hostile as they were, I was not particularly fearful for my own safety. However, there was an underlying sense of vulnerability that came with the sheer number of rioters that were on the streets. While their motives were unclear, putting oneself in a situation amongst people who are not acting rationally, or willing to listen to reason while engaging in a mob mentality is, generally speaking, a high-risk, low reward proposition.
I decided to take a few back streets on my eight minute journey home in hopes of finding peace and steering clear of unwanted trouble. To my dismay, I bumped an elderly man and looter on accident trying to pass him on the narrow London streets. Not looking for any trouble, I politely said, “Excuse me, Sir,” gave him a pat on the back and kept on my way. Well, the gentleman, if you could call him that, did not approve of my actions. This sent him into a tirade.
“Who the fuck are you? Why the fuck are you touching me? I don’t know you. You’re a fucking pussy!”
While his lady friend tried to calm him down, I decided it was best not to turn around to address him. There were still mobs of kids on the side streets and didn’t not want to draw unwanted attention. Moving forward, I had distanced myself a good 15 yards from him. At that point, I was hit in the back and leg with a projectile. Apparently, he was not real keen on the merchandise he had just taken the time to loot. Or maybe it was me? I’m still a little unclear on that part because we haven’t had the chance to sit down over tea to discuss this event.
As I began to pick up the pace slightly, I still remained calm and began to turn down another side street that brings me 400 feet from my house. However, with a pack of ten teenagers approaching me, the man began to yell, “Get this motherfucker right here! Beat his ass.”
I decided a crisp walk probably wasn’t appropriate for the situation. So I used the agility I had honed during the previous seven weeks of my P90X workouts and booked it home. Looking over my shoulder several times, I was lucky no one had taken the man’s directives seriously, while feeling a better about the life once my front door shut securely behind me.
From there, I ready my survival kit: knife set, 6 weeks Kenpo X and a Midwestern accent. Yes, I even practiced yelling, “Get the fuck out of here, bitch!” in a manner that would have made Jesse Pinkman proud.
While I had reached my safe haven, the MET police were still nowhere to be found. They had been stretched thin from earlier disturbances. Clapham was left completely unprotected. And by the time the news crews hit, it was too little, too late. Residents were in fear from the destruction that took place in their normally calm village.
Around 1:30 a.m., enough MET police gathered in Clapham to finally run the rioters out. However, the damage had been done.
