The Name

The name, The Higher Plane, was coined in the Summer of 2007 by site founder MK and his best friend, Sammy J. The Higher Plane was an expression used between the two when amongst a group of people who had no idea what they were talking about. However, while the general crowd could not understand their banter, the two had a perfect understanding of what was being said as well as the true meaning behind the words. Thus, it represents the idea that we can rise above the crowd in thoughts and actions. We can live above the status quo. We can operate on a Higher Plane for the betterment of the world.

The Birth of a Web Abode

During the Summer of 2008, the site’s founder, MK, was in the process of moving from Cleveland, OH to London, England. In the previous months leading up to his departure, he recorded a solo mixtape, It’s the Mixtape, Bitches!, as a matter of fun while in graduate school. Needing to find a platform to release make the mixtape available to friends in the States, MK launched a blog strictly as a means for friends to have access to his music. The site was launched under a different moniker on the Blogger format.

An avid hip-hop fan, MK had a history of putting his friends on to new music. While the whole blogging thing was a new concept, he began to use the recently launched site as a platform to get new music to friends across the Atlantic. The word began to spread, and somehow people began to like this web destination. From there, it has become a steady and enjoyable past time for the former journalism major.

The Higher Plane provides readers with information and commentary on the latest music, art and style. We cover what is happening today, and what will be hip in the future. So, hop in the DeLorean with us.

We also run a weekly feature column that seeks to inform and create dialogue about the present day issues we all face, while promoting thought in a genuine and positive fashion.

Another popular segment is our New Artist Week. Over the course of five days each month, we introduce our readers to new and emerging artists by running a feature article or interview. We want to provide a platform for talented indivuals to get their dreams out by highlighting their creativity and accomplishments.

The Brand

The Higher Plane team expanded from two main members to five core members with extended family.  With an extremely strong and skilled team in place, the next step was to give the brand a new image.

In an effort to solidify the brand and move beyond being a website only, The Higher Plane created a new brand identity. Over the course of several months, the group collaborated to create the identity you see now.

Our brand is certainly not for everyone. We look to promote thought in a genuine and positive fashion, while accentuating our personal styles and likes. We are unified by the idea that we can all live a better life, but more importantly, make a great impact on others around us. We can be the vessels of positivity and change, and it begins by ascending to The Higher Plane.
